Enrolling your child in their first martial arts class is an exciting step for any family, but it often comes with a handful of last-minute questions:
“What should my child wear?”
“Do I need to buy a uniform before we even show up?”
“What if it’s freezing outside—do we need layers on the mat?”
As instructors, we admit we sometimes forget to address these simple details during our initial phone conversations with parents! To help you feel 100% confident for your child’s first visit to our Oak Creek academy, here is a complete breakdown of what to wear, what to expect, and how to prepare.
👟 1. What to Wear: Keep It Simple Gym Attire
You do not need to buy a white karate gi or order pajamas off Amazon before your child’s trial class!
For your child’s very first visit, simply dress them in normal, comfortable gym clothes—whatever they would typically wear for P.E. class at school:
-
Upper Body: A comfortable t-shirt, athletic shirt, or hoodie.
-
Lower Body: Shorts, sweatpants, or athletic pants.
-
Footwear: Students train either barefoot or in comfortable socks on our clean padded mats.
One Quick Tip: Please avoid skirts or dresses, as they can restrict movement during kicking and stretching drills.
Once your child officially starts their martial arts journey, we handle all custom uniforms and official team logo gear in-house—so you never have to worry about ordering incorrect sizes online!
🌡️ 2. What to Expect During the First Lesson
Whether it is 90 degrees in the peak of summer or sub-zero in the middle of a Wisconsin winter, our Oak Creek dojo is fully climate-controlled and kept at a comfortable 70 degrees year-round. You don’t need to bundle your child up or worry about outside weather elements once you step through the front door!
Your child’s first experience will begin with a 1-on-1 or small-group introductory session:
-
Parent Involvement: Parents stay and watch 100% of the lesson! This ensures you see exactly how our instructors teach and understand how we structure our classes.
-
Core Skills: Your child will learn how to stand tall, execute a proper karate punch, throw a front kick, and execute a high block.
-
The Highlight: Before the session ends, your child will break their very first child-safe karate board to build instant, explosive confidence!
👨👩👧👦 3. Bring the Whole Family (Siblings Are Always Welcome!)
It is very common for parents to bring one child for a trial class while a brother or sister sits on the sidelines “on the fence.”
We encourage you to bring siblings along! If a brother or sister watches the fun, gets excited, and decides midway through that they want to hop onto the floor and try a kick or punch too, our instructors will happily welcome them right onto the mat!
