Please, let’s stop it with the participation trophies!
Having spent 10 years as an elementary school teacher—instructing fourth and fifth-grade band and orchestra with both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Education—I distinctly remember when the participation trophy movement started taking over schools about 20 years ago.
Back then, the rationale was simple: administrators and veteran educators wanted to protect children’s self-esteem. The goal was to raise everyone’s confidence by eliminating “winners and losers” in spelling bees, field days, and kickball tournaments so nobody felt left out.
Fast forward two decades, and the results are clear: giving awards just for showing up doesn’t build confidence. It robs children of developing grit.
Here is why hand-outs water down true achievement, and how learning to lose—and overcome—builds the mental toughness kids need to succeed in the real world.
🏆 1. The Danger of Watering Down Real Achievement
When everybody receives a trophy regardless of effort or skill, two damaging things happen:
-
It invalidates hard work: The kids who practiced endlessly, stayed disciplined, and earned first, second, or third place realize their extra effort didn’t actually matter.
-
It destroys internal drive: When children are rewarded simply for existing, they lose the desire to push themselves, practice harder, or strive for excellence.
If every outcome is treated as a win, the word “success” loses all meaning.
🛡️ 2. Why Failure is Required to Build Grit
Grit—the perseverance and passion to pursue long-term goals—cannot be taught through a textbook, and it certainly can’t be handed out in a gift bag.
Grit is forged through failure.
Learning how to lose gracefully, analyze what went wrong, dust yourself off, and get back to work is what builds true mental fortitude. When children are shielded from failure, they grow into young adults who crumble at the first sign of adversity, criticism, or defeat.
To become resilient, kids need the opportunity to experience setbacks in a safe, supportive environment where they can learn how to bounce back stronger.
🥋 3. Earned Success on the Martial Arts Mat
At Championship Martial Arts – Oak Creek, we do not hand out participation belts or unearned stripes.
When a student ties a new belt around their waist, they know with 100% certainty that they earned every single inch of it through sweat, focus, practice, and perseverance.
-
Toughness: They learn to handle constructive corrections without giving up.
-
Strength: They build the physical and mental stamina to overcome challenging physical drills.
-
Focus: They lock in their attention to master complex techniques.
When you combine toughness, strength, and focus, you build true grit. That earned grit is what makes a child bully-proof, confident at school, and equipped to navigate life’s real challenges.
