You want your child to quit their favorite activity? I can tell you exactly how to do it in one easy step: Tell them everything they did wrong the entire way home in the car.
I call this the Backseat Coach Sport Killer. As a former teacher with a Master’s in Education, I’ve seen it happen to thousands of kids in Oak Creek. The second a child steps off the field or the mat, they are emotionally raw. If the first thing they hear is a laundry list of corrections, their brain starts to associate that activity with “not being good enough.”
The “Fix-It Mode” Trap
Whether it’s a 15-year-old junior instructor or a veteran coach, the natural instinct is to go into “Fix-It Mode.” We see a mistake and we want to correct it immediately.
I remember riding home from karate tournaments with my dad and brother. If we didn’t win, my dad would joke about how “light the trunk was” because there were no trophies. We turned out fine, but that high-pressure approach doesn’t work for every kid. For many, it’s the quickest way to make them disinterested and ready to quit.
The PCP Method: Your Car Ride Manual Override
If you want to talk about the game or the class, you need a system. At Championship Martial Arts – Oak Creek, we train our instructors and parents to use the PCP Method:
-
Praise: Start with something they did right. “Dude, you cracked that ball today! You have so much power.”
-
Correct (with Collaboration): Instead of telling them what was wrong, ask them. “What do you think you want to do even better next game? How can we work on that together?”
-
Praise: End on a high note. “I love watching you out there. You’re working so hard.”
Keeping the Joy in the Journey
The goal isn’t just to build a better athlete; it’s to build Grit and Focus without breaking their spirit. When you replace the “Backseat Coach” with a parent who supports the process, you ensure your child stays in the game long enough to reap the real rewards of Martial Arts training.

The 3-Step Action Plan (The Snippet Trap)
-
The “No-Fix” Zone: Make the first 10 minutes of the car ride home a “Correction-Free Zone.” Focus on hydration and how they felt, not how they performed.
-
Apply the PCP Method: Use Praise-Correct-Praise every time you discuss their performance.
-
Ask, Don’t Tell: Shift from being the “Expert” to being the “Partner.” Ask them what they think they should work on next time.
