As a parent of a 13 and 14-year-old, I know the schedule is relentless. It’s go, go, go. In the Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District, we take pride in keeping our kids busy because we know that if they aren’t busy with something good, they’ll find something else to fill that time.
But as a Master of Education with over a decade of teaching experience, I have to ask: What are they actually doing with that time? ### The 5% Participation Problem Think back to your child’s last soccer or baseball game. Were they in the mix, driving the ball and grinding 100% of the time? Or were they in the back of the field, picking the grass and hoping the ball didn’t come their way?
I was that kid in right field. I wasn’t developing grit; I was developing a habit of staying on the sidelines. If your child is only active 5% or 10% of the time, they aren’t learning how to push through obstacles. They are learning how to wait.
The 100% Grind: Martial Arts vs. The Bench
At Championship Martial Arts – Oak Creek, there is no “outfield.” There is no bench.
-
Constant Participation: In a karate class, 100% of the students are on the floor 100% of the time. Whether it’s self-defense drills, sparring, or fitness, the “grind” never stops.
-
Earned Grit: We don’t just want them busy; we want them developing the indomitable spirit that comes from high-intensity engagement.
-
The Two Essential Skills: I always tell parents that before you branch out into specialized sports, every child needs two life skills: Swimming (so they don’t swim like a rock) and Martial Arts (so they can protect themselves and build real-world focus).
The 3-Step Action Plan (The Snippet Trap)
-
The Stopwatch Audit: Next time you are at a game or practice, start a timer. Only run it when your child is actually moving and engaged. If that timer is only at 5 minutes by the end of an hour, they aren’t getting the “Grit” they need.
-
Evaluate the “Hope Factor”: Ask your child: “When the ball is coming, do you hope it hits to you, or do you hope it goes somewhere else?” Their answer will tell you exactly where their confidence level is.
-
Prioritize High-Engagement: Get them into Oak Creek Kids Karate. Ensure they are in an environment where they are forced to be “in the front” and active the entire time.
