As a former elementary school teacher and martial arts school owner who has worked with thousands of local kids over the years, I love discussing the pros and cons of traditional youth sports versus martial arts.
If your child has played youth baseball, softball, or soccer in Oak Creek, you have likely run into one of the most frustrating aspects of competitive team sports: the bench.
Even when a child is showing up to every practice, working hard, and making personal progress week after week, the team’s primary obligation in traditional sports is often to field only the top players to win games. That means if your child isn’t already one of the elite star athletes, they end up sitting on the bench. They miss out on playing time, don’t get to show off their progress to their parents, and slowly lose their passion for staying active.
Here is why traditional sports can sometimes drain a child’s self-esteem, and how martial arts offers a completely different, empowering approach.
⚾ 1. The Story of Going Two Years “Undefeated in Reverse”
I remember playing youth softball all through elementary and middle school. I was on a team that tried to keep the same core group of kids together year after year.
Over the course of two straight years… we didn’t win a single game. Not one! We were the exact opposite of undefeated.
I can tell you firsthand that going out to the field every week knowing, “Well, we’re going to lose again,” did absolutely nothing to build my self-confidence or self-discipline. It made me dread going to games and practices. When kids feel like they are constantly losing or sitting on the sidelines, their confidence takes a massive hit.
🥋 2. Different “Batting Averages” on the Mat
In martial arts, every student progresses at their own speed and on their own personal timeline.
Think of it like professional baseball: every player on a Major League roster has a different batting average, specialized skill, or fielding strength—yet they are all pro baseball players. It’s the exact same on our martial arts floor:
-
Two students can both wear an Orange Belt, but have totally different strengths.
-
One child might excel at high-energy kicking drills.
-
Another child might have incredible precision with their punches.
-
Others thrive during technical katas (forms) or controlled sparring.
We celebrate every student’s unique strengths while helping them polish their weaker areas—without ever comparing them to the child standing next to them.
🏆 3. There Is No Bench in Martial Arts
The greatest difference between traditional youth team sports and martial arts is simple: In martial arts, there is no bench.
No child ever sits out. No child is kept on the sidelines while others get all the playing time. Every single student is on the team, every student participates in every drill, and every child gets the opportunity to shine on the floor in front of their parents!
