We are in the absolute thick of summer right now. The sun is out, the weather is warm, and neighborhoods across the community are filled with children playing outside, riding bikes, and enjoying their hard-earned freedom. Over the years, we have hosted numerous youth safety events at our academy, and time after time, we hear from parents who assume an abduction attempt is something that only happens in movies or distant cities.
We want to share a deeply personal, chilling real-life story that happened right here at our Oak Creek academy that completely changes that perspective.
“Sensei, What You Do Matters”
On a recent Saturday, we hosted one of our free community stranger danger workshops. A local family decided to attend just thinking it was a good, proactive parenting opportunity to give their young daughter some basic safety tools. She had a fantastic time, learned a few core boundary-setting skills, and the parents chose to officially enroll her in our regular program.
What nobody could have anticipated was what happened less than 24 hours later.
On Sunday afternoon, while playing on her very own front lawn right here in the local area, a stranger pulled up in a vehicle and attempted to abduct her.
Instead of freezing in panic, this brave young girl instantly channeled her training. She did absolutely everything she was taught to do at our seminar just one day prior. She set strong boundaries, used her voice like a shield, and executed her escape plan immediately. Recognizing that he had lost the element of surprise and that this child was trained to create an scene, the predator sped off right away.
On Monday morning, the mother walked into our facility to drop her daughter off for class. She approached the instructor, completely overwhelmed with emotion, and began to cry. She said, “Sensei, what you do matters. I cannot even fathom what might have happened to my family if we hadn’t attended that workshop on Saturday.”
Confronting the Reality of Youth Safety
We understand there will always be naysayers online who look at national statistics and point out that a majority of childhood abductions are carried out by someone the child already knows. We know those statistics inside and out. But knowing that statistic does absolutely nothing to protect your family from the terrifying reality that stranger abductions do still happen.
