I’ll be the first to admit it: sometimes, when I’m on the phone with a parent who is excited about starting their child in karate, I forget to mention the simplest thing—what they should actually wear to their first class.
As a former teacher with a Master’s in Education, I know that new environments can cause “logistical anxiety” for both kids and parents. You want to show up prepared. You might be wondering: “Do they need those white ‘pajamas’ right away? Is it going to be cold in the dojo? Can I bring the siblings?”
At Championship Martial Arts – Oak Creek, we want your first visit to be about the experience, not the outfit.
The “Gym Class” Rule
For your child’s very first martial arts lesson, there is no need to rush to Amazon to buy a uniform (or a gi). In fact, we prefer you don’t! Our team is “logoed up” like a professional sports team, and we provide all the official gear in-house once you decide to continue.
For the first day, just follow the Gym Class Rule:
-
Do Wear: Shorts, sweatpants, t-shirts, or hoodies. Anything they would be comfortable running and jumping in.
-
Don’t Wear: Dresses, skirts, or anything too restrictive.
-
Footwear: We train barefoot on our professional karate mats, so they can just kick off their shoes and socks when they arrive.
70 Degrees Year-Round
I’m recording this in my backyard, but we don’t train in the elements! Whether it’s 100° outside in a Wisconsin summer or -10° in the middle of winter, it is always a comfortable 70° inside our facility. You don’t need to bundle them up once they’re inside—just dress for a comfortable indoor workout.
What to Expect (The Secret Part)
Parents, you stay with us the entire time. This first session is a one-on-one or small-group lesson designed to make your child feel like a superhero. They’ll learn a punch, a kick, and a block.
Here is the secret part: Don’t tell your child yet, but they are going to break their very first child-safe karate board at the end of the lesson. We want that moment of success to be a total surprise!
Bring the Whole Team
If you have a sibling who is on the fence—maybe “Johnny” is ready but “Mary” isn’t sure—bring them both! We love it when siblings watch from the sidelines. Often, once they see how much “Hard Fun” we’re having, they end up hopping on the mat to join in.
Our goal is to make the transition from “new kid” to “martial artist” as seamless as possible. We can’t wait to see your family on the mat.
