In a world where titles are often dropped and communication is increasingly casual, some parents wonder why we still insist on “Yes, sir” and “Yes, ma’am” at Championship Martial Arts – Oak Creek.
Is it old-fashioned? Perhaps. Is it necessary? Absolutely, unequivocally, yes.
The “Respect for the Technique”
We aren’t teaching kids how to play tag; we are teaching them how to punch, kick, elbow, and knee strike. These are powerful physical skills. When we require students to address instructors with respect, we are teaching them to respect the power of what they are learning.
If a student doesn’t respect the process of learning, they won’t respect the responsibility that comes with being physically capable.
The Sensei Standard
I remember my own childhood clearly: if I got in trouble at school, I was worried. But if my parents said, “We need to talk to your Sensei,” that was a whole different level of accountability.
There is a “layered respect” developed in the dojo that is distinct from the classroom. In a regular school, a teacher is a facilitator of information. In the dojo, an instructor is a guardian of a craft. That distinction creates a unique environment of discipline that many children don’t experience anywhere else.
Why It Matters for Your Child
-
It Builds Mindset: Addressing an adult with respect automatically puts a child in “Learning Mode.” It shifts them from a casual, distracted state to a focused, listening state.
-
It Bridges Generations: In our world, kids rarely have to acknowledge authority figures with verbal deference. This practice reinforces that there are people in their lives—coaches, teachers, elders—who deserve recognition of their role.
-
It’s About the “Why”: We aren’t teaching them to be subservient. We are teaching them to be aware. A student who respects their teacher is a student who listens, learns faster, and stays safer.
