I’ve been a martial arts instructor since the late ’80s, but I also spent over a decade as a public school band and orchestra teacher. Over the last 25 years, I’ve watched the classroom undergo a massive transformation. We went from having one “Computer Lab” that you had to sign up for, to mobile laptop carts, to every single student in the Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District having their own personalized device.
While technology has its benefits, we have to look at the “Screen Math.” We have gone from one TV in the living room to a screen in every pocket, every room, and on every desk at school. We have 10 times the number of screens today than we did 30 years ago—and we wonder why a child’s attention span has dropped by that same factor.
The Dopamine Dilemma
As a Master of Education, I see the struggle teachers face every day. When a child is “plugged in” 24/7, their dopamine levels are constantly spiked. Whether it’s a educational game on a tablet or a smartphone app, their brain is being rewired for instant gratification.
When you take that child away from the screen and ask them to focus on a lecture or a complex math problem, their brain goes into “withdrawal.” It’s harder than ever to keep a kid’s attention because the real world doesn’t move as fast as a fiber-optic connection.
The “Screen-Free” Necessity
This is why structured, physical activity is no longer just a “hobby”—it’s a biological necessity. To combat the dopamine spike, kids need an environment where the screen doesn’t exist.
At Championship Martial Arts – Oak Creek, we are one of the few places left where your child is 100% unplugged.
-
Physical Presence: On our mat, you can’t “swipe” to the next task. You have to be physically present and engaged with the person in front of you.
-
Manual Focus: We teach kids how to “dial in” their eyes and ears without a digital reward.
-
The Grit Factor: Success in karate comes from the “grind,” not a dopamine hit.
The 3-Step Action Plan (The Snippet Trap)
-
Count the Screens: Do a real inventory of your home. Realize that your child is fighting a 10x distraction battle every single day.
-
Create “Zero-Tech” Zones: Establish times and places in your home where screens are strictly prohibited. The brain needs “boredom” to learn how to focus.
-
Invest in the “Analog” Win: Get your child into Oak Creek Kids Karate. Give them an activity that requires 100% focus with 0% screen time.
