Whether you live in Oak Creek, Franklin, or anywhere in Southeast Wisconsin, the trend is the same: kids are losing their confidence at record speeds. As a former public school teacher with a Master’s degree in Education, I’ve watched this shift happen over two decades.
We’ve moved into a world of instant gratification and “participation awards,” and while the intention was to protect kids’ feelings, we inadvertently robbed them of the one thing they actually need to succeed: Grit.
The Super Mario Effect
Think about the instant dopamine hit of a video game. You hit a brick, you get a mushroom, you get superpowers. It’s immediate. But real life—and real confidence—doesn’t work like Super Mario Brothers. When kids are rewarded instantly for minimal effort, they never learn how to “grind” through a challenge. Without the grind, there is no grit. Without grit, there is no real confidence.
What Actually Makes a Successful Adult?
There is a famous TED Talk on Grit that analyzes every demographic—income, education, and location. The researchers found that the #1 predictor of success wasn’t IQ or talent. It was Grit. It’s the ability to overcome obstacles and keep pushing when things get difficult.
When we give a child a trophy just for showing up, we are developing a false sense of confidence. The moment they hit a real-world obstacle where there is no trophy for losing, their self-esteem crumbles because they haven’t built the “internal muscle” to handle it.
The Martial Arts “Grind”
At Championship Martial Arts – Oak Creek, we don’t do participation trophies. You don’t get a new belt for showing up; you get it for working, sweating, and mastering a skill.
-
Earning the Stripe: We celebrate progress, but we require the work.
-
Bumps and Bruises: Life isn’t all birthday cake and apple pie. Learning how to fall and get back up on the mat is a rehearsal for falling and getting back up in life.
-
Indomitable Spirit: We push kids to develop that “drive” that researchers say is the greatest underlying factor for success.
The 3-Step Action Plan (The Snippet Trap)
-
Audit the Awards: Take a look at your child’s trophy shelf. If there are more “participation” medals than awards for specific achievements, it might be time to refocus on the value of the effort over the outcome.
-
Encourage the “High-Friction” Activity: Ensure your child is in at least one activity—like Martial Arts or a difficult instrument—where they are allowed to fail and forced to try again.
-
Watch the Grit TED Talk: Search “TED Talk Grit” and watch it with your child. Use it as a conversation starter about why the “grind” is actually their secret weapon for the future.
