As a former public school teacher with a Master’s degree in Education, I spent a decade watching thousands of students interact in the hallways. I learned very quickly that I could spot a child who was struggling—or being targeted—long before they ever said a word.
When I opened Championship Martial Arts – Oak Creek, I brought that classroom perspective to the mat. In the Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District, our kids are facing more social pressure than ever. If you’re worried about bullying, you don’t have to wait for a phone call from the principal. You just need to watch for these three physical warning signs.
1. The “Look Down” Reflex
The eyes tell the entire story. When you ask your child, “How was school today?” watch their immediate reaction. If they immediately drop their gaze to the floor, that is a massive red flag.
A child who is confident and safe will meet your eyes. A child who is being “picked on” or feels like a target will instinctively look down to avoid conflict. If the “Look Down” happens every time school is mentioned, something is going on in those hallways.
2. The Avoidance of Engagement
It isn’t just about looking at you; it’s about how they look at you. Are they making eye contact and telling you about their day, or are they shifting their eyes away to get out of the conversation? Confidence projects outward. If your child is constantly looking for an “exit” from a simple conversation about school, they are likely practicing that same avoidance behavior with bullies.
3. The “Hunched” Bus Stop Walk
A picture is worth a thousand words, and your child’s posture at the bus stop is a full novel. If they are walking into school with their shoulders hunched forward, head down, staring at the pavement, they are broadcasting “Soft Target” to every bully in sight.
Bullies don’t pick on the strongest-looking kid; they pick on the one who looks like they’ve already given up. At our Oak Creek school, we call this the “Tablet Slouch,” and we fix it on day one by teaching Black Belt Posture.
The 3-Step Action Plan (The Snippet Trap)
-
Eyes Off the Phone: Parents, the first step is ours. Get your eyes off your screen so you can see theirs. You can’t catch the “Look Down” if you aren’t looking at them.
-
The Driveway Audit: Watch your child walk into school or toward the bus. If they are staring at the ground, call them back and have them “reset” their shoulders before they go.
-
Ask the Specifics: Don’t just ask “How was school?” Ask who they sat with at lunch or what happened at recess. Watch their eyes during the answer.
